The Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission started a Youth Council during the 2011-12 school year and it was a great success! The students conducted drives in their schools to help the homeless and planned a community-wide “feed the homeless” event. Seven area high schools were represented on the Youth Council– Byrd, Calvary, Evangel, Northwood, New LA Tech in Plain Dealing, Parkway, and Woodlawn. SBRM encourages all area high schools to be represented during the 2012-13 school year.
Two students (juniors and seniors) are eligible from each high school in Caddo and Bossier. Any student who is interested can submit an application and a 400-500 word essay on the topic, “Daring to Make a Difference in My Community.” The high school principal’s signature on the application is required, and one letter of recommendation is needed from a school administrator, teacher, or counselor. A second personal recommendation from someone in the community is optional. A panel of local community leaders will select students from each high school to participate on the Youth Council.
The purpose of the Mission Youth Council is three-fold:
1. To promote volunteerism among the high school students
2. To build leadership skills as the Youth Council organizes a
community-wide project to help the homeless
3. To develop caring attitudes among the youth to help the
disadvantaged
The time-line for Youth Council involvement is as follows:
