Volunteer Opportunities

How to Start

Attend a Volunteer OrientationUWDOC 3
In order to volunteer at Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission, you MUST attend a Volunteer Orientation, which is offered on the first Saturday every month except July and December (unless a holiday causes a conflict) from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the 901 McNeil St. facility in Shreveport. This hour-long session will acquaint volunteers with the different areas in which they can serve. A DVD will show you the full spectrum of ministry at the Mission, you will fill out a volunteer application, and you will tour the facility. Check upcoming dates on the calendar, and if you plan to attend, please RSVP.

Groups: One member of a group may attend the orientation, and that person can relate the information to their group. However, each person serving must fill out a volunteer application.

Upcoming orientation dates on Saturday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.:

  • Saturday, January 6
  • Saturday, February 3
  • Saturday, March 3
  • Saturday, April 7

*Please note that there will be no orientation for the month of July and December.

15-51SBRMServe a Meal
This is our most popular volunteer opportunity. You can serve a hot, nutritious meal to someone in need. We need individuals and groups (3 to 6 people) to serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. You can schedule once a week, once a month, or several times a year, whatever suits your schedule.  Regular serving times: Breakfast from 7:00 to 7:30 a.m. (Weekday) and 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. (Weekends), Lunch from 12:00-12:30 p.m. and Dinner from 5:00 to 5:45 p.m. (Weekday) and 4:00 to 4:45 p.m. (Weekends). Please arrive 15 minutes prior to serving time.

Medical/Dental Volunteers Needed
Licensed doctors, dentists, nurses, dental hygienists, dental assistants and others familiar with medical and dental intake procedures are needed to help staff our free medical and dental clinics. All clinics are scheduled around volunteers schedule.

Work at Mission Thrift Store
The Mission Thrift Store needs volunteers to help sort donated goods, apply price tags, clean the facilities, shelve and hang items, and a variety of other tasks. All proceeds from the Thrift Store are used to fund the ministry of the Rescue Mission, and our guests are able to learn retail skills that will help them get jobs. The Thrift Store is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Minister in Children’s Church12-52 Hiway 80 Rescue Mission
Volunteer church groups are needed to help minister to the children during evening chapel services from 6 to 7 p.m. once a month, or once a week. These children need the love of God displayed for them. You can play games, tell Bible stories, or provide a craft activity. Your ministry can help a child through a difficult time.

In addition to our chapel service, each Tuesday and Thursday is Mission Fun Night. Volunteer churches, church groups and organizations come and provide fun evening of fellowship and entertainment for our guests. Groups have done game night, trivia night, BINGO, movie night, craft time, ice cream social, etc. This is a great way to develop personal relationships with our guests and have fun at the same time.

Other Volunteer Opportunities

  • Complete miscellaneous projects at one of the Mission facilities
  • Collect goods off the immediate needs list
  • Help with special events during the year

Business & Organization Partnerships

Businesses help in a variety of ways, from donating a new playground, creating a children’s play room, to being a sponsor at one of our annual fund-raising events. The opportunities are endless in how a business could help the guests at the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission. We would love to cultivate a relationship with you and your business.
