How do I get started volunteering?
Onsite volunteering has been temporarily suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Please continue to check back on our website or follow us on social media for continued updates on when volunteer service will resume. Thank you! We ask that all volunteers start by attending a Volunteer Orientation which are usually on the first Saturday morning of each month, 10:00 to 12:00 pm. Take a look at the Mission calendar for future dates on by clicking the Volunteer Opportunities tab. *Groups: One member of the group may attend the orientation. It is the responsibility of that member to relate the information learned at the orientation to the group serving. However, every person serving does have to fill out a volunteer application.
How old do I have to be to volunteer?
Due to current health code regulations, only children 11 and older can help serve in the kitchen area. The Rescue Mission requires anyone under the age of 18 to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian while volunteering at any of the Rescue Mission facilities.
I have small children. Can I bring them?
Children are welcome (must be 11 and older in the kitchen), but they must be supervised by a parent or legal guardian at all times. Group volunteer projects for children under the age of 11 must be coordinated through our Volunteer Relations team.
Are there evening and weekend volunteer opportunities?
Yes, the Rescue Mission has volunteer opportunities seven days a week, mornings, afternoons and evenings.
What kinds of things can volunteers do?
Volunteers are able to engage in a variety of tasks: Serving lunch or dinner; hosting donation drives; and retail work at our Thrift Store are our most common volunteer engagement opportunities.
What if my schedule is inconsistent? Can I still volunteer?
Yes, you can schedule a volunteer time that is convenient for you, whether it is a regular time or you can schedule periodically when you have available time.
Do you have any opportunities for groups to volunteer?
Yes, one member of the group must attend an orientation. It is the responsibility of that member to relate the information learned at the orientation to the group serving. Please note, everyone in the group must fill out and turn in a volunteer application.
What if something comes up and I can’t serve?
It is okay. We will reschedule you. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as you know you aren’t going to make it.
Is there a dress code for volunteering?
Yes, we ask that you wear clothing that is comfortable and modest. No short shorts, midriff-revealing tops, muscle shirt or any tight fitting clothes. Closed toe shoes, long pants and sleeved shirts must be worn in the kitchen at all times.
Do I need to have any volunteer experience to serve?
No experience necessary, just a servant’s heart and a willing spirit is all we require.
